Your VIN is stamped in multiple locations on every vehicle. Here are the most common spots:
Look through the lower-left corner of the windshield from outside the vehicle. The VIN plate is visible on the dashboard.
Open the driver's door and look for a white sticker on the door post (the B-pillar). The VIN is printed here along with tire pressure and weight ratings.
Your vehicle title and registration documents always include the VIN. This is the most reliable source for buying/selling.
Your insurance card and policy documents list the VIN. Check your glove compartment — your insurance card is likely there.
Every VIN follows the ISO 3779 standard. Each character encodes specific vehicle information:
| Position | Encodes |
|---|---|
| 1 | Country of manufacture |
| 2 | Manufacturer |
| 3 | Vehicle type / division |
| 4–8 | Vehicle attributes (body, engine, series, restraints) |
| 9 | Check digit (fraud detection) |
| 10 | Model year |
| 11 | Assembly plant |
| 12–17 | Sequential serial number |
