Where to Find Your VIN

Your VIN is stamped in multiple locations on every vehicle. Here are the most common spots:

Dashboard (Driver Side)

Look through the lower-left corner of the windshield from outside the vehicle. The VIN plate is visible on the dashboard.

Driver's Door Jamb

Open the driver's door and look for a white sticker on the door post (the B-pillar). The VIN is printed here along with tire pressure and weight ratings.

Title & Registration

Your vehicle title and registration documents always include the VIN. This is the most reliable source for buying/selling.

Insurance Card

Your insurance card and policy documents list the VIN. Check your glove compartment — your insurance card is likely there.

What Each VIN Digit Means

Every VIN follows the ISO 3779 standard. Each character encodes specific vehicle information:

Position Encodes
1 Country of manufacture
2 Manufacturer
3 Vehicle type / division
4–8 Vehicle attributes (body, engine, series, restraints)
9 Check digit (fraud detection)
10 Model year
11 Assembly plant
12–17 Sequential serial number

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about VINs and how this decoder works.

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every motor vehicle when it's manufactured. It's the vehicle's permanent fingerprint — no two vehicles ever share the same VIN. The VIN encodes the manufacturer, country of origin, vehicle type, model year, assembly plant, and a unique serial number. Every car, truck, motorcycle, and trailer sold in the U.S. since 1981 has a standardized 17-character VIN.
Your VIN is stamped in several spots: (1) Dashboard — look through the lower-left corner of the windshield from outside; (2) Driver's door jamb — open the driver's door and check the sticker on the door post; (3) Vehicle title & registration — always lists the VIN; (4) Insurance card — in your glove box; (5) Under the hood — usually stamped on the front of the engine block or firewall.
